Two great tastes that taste great together

I would like to talk about this trailer, but that would be breaking the first rule…

Dreamweavers

Have you had one of those dreams that involves friends or coworkers and some sort of conflict or romantic liason, only to see them the following day and feel awkward around them?

The fact that an “involuntary” thought can manipulate our emotions and interactions even when we realize the entire conflict was a product of our imagination is a testament to the power of dreams.

It is within that world that writer/director Christopher Nolan wants to explore with us with his latest film, “Inception.”

For many a film geek, “Inception” is the most anticipated film of the summer. Nolan, the co-writer/director of such smaller psychological films as “Memento,” and “The Prestige,” has also established himself as an unlikely hero of the big-budget action as well with his rejuvenation of the Batman franchise, “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight.”

“Inception” represents a marriage of the two – a brain-tickling blockbuster. Continue reading

Smoke and mirrors

I am convinced that producer Jerry Bruckheimer secretly lurks through the back lots and theme parks of Disney looking for ideas on which to base his next film. For he already has a story formula down (just check “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “National Treasure” or Prince of Persia”), all he needs is a setting and an established name to exploit.

His victim with “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is Disney’s crown prince – a mouse by the name of Mickey – who starred in a chapter of “Fantasia,” the animated musical film from 1940. This simple tale is the seed on which Bruckheimer will spread his fertilizer. Continue reading

Last ‘Predators’ on the Left

Since I appear to be too lazy to post my written review of ‘Predators,’ the sequel/remake of that awesome slice of beefy manliness known as ‘Predator’ from 1987, I will merely point thee to my podcast with our good friends over at Last Blog on the Left. Bo was absent, so the lunatics took over the asylumn (thankfully, the stuck me with one hot inmate — Maven!!).

So join us over at Last Blog Radio as we vivisect the alien creature feature and stroll through our memories of the original to see how it stacks up.

And Maven, I’ll take a bear trap for you any day.

Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka? Is that you?

No, unfortunately, this is in the new image for the Conan remake, courtesy of CinemaBlend.

If there is a god, this is not a joke

If at first you don’t succeed, Twi, Twi again

I couldn’t do this one alone. For the life of me, I cannot fathom the whole “Twilight” phenomenon, and I know it was clearly not scribbled with me in mind. I suffered the first two installments of the vampiric teen Harlequin romance films alone, but figured that instead of dumping all over the third chapter, I would enlist some members of the target demographic to walk my throuh “Twilight: Eclipse” and perhaps enlighten me on what I have been missing with the tale of lovesick Bella, her bloodsucking beau Edward and her canine companion Jacob.

“Eclipse” takes us deeper into Bella’s inner turmoil. Will she embrace fully her love for Edward by making the ultimate sacrifice of becoming a vampire herself? Will her feelings for Jacob ultimately be revealed? What’s up with this new pack of vampires terrorizing Seattle? And, most importantly for me, when will this all end?

First, allow me to introduce my resident “Eclipse” experts: Continue reading
